What Does Partnership Mean?

By America Kimlinger

As StartCHURCH's Director of Partnership Development, I have had the privilege of closely collaborating with diverse organizations and ministries to build and strengthen our partnerships. I find it incredibly rewarding because it allows us to build meaningful connections and contribute to the growth and impact of many incredible Kingdom-minded organizations shaping the future of churches and ministries.

Over the last few weeks, I have been focused on preparing materials for some of our partners. This experience has inspired multiple reflections on the essence and significance of partnerships, which have become a series of blogs.

This exploration and the time spent staring at a blank piece of paper led me to ask what a partnership is. What does it mean? What does it represent? I wanted to understand its definition beyond the confines of business jargon or abstract dictionary definitions, seeking a deeper, more meaningful understanding. I believe partnership is one of those words that can have multiple interpretations; it all depends on who you ask.

Discovering “Communitas”

In my quest for understanding, and because I’m curious and like searching up random things, I searched the word partnership in Latin. I discovered that in Latin, the word for partnership is "Communitas," which can also be translated into English as community, kinship, fellowship, or joint possession.

This insight deeply resonated with me. Initially, I anticipated finding a more practical, business-oriented translation. However, "Communitas" revealed the profound meaning of partnership. It transcends mere business models or contractual arrangements. It extends beyond the confines of relationships between two parties, free from limitations imposed by clauses, roles, structures, or durations. Instead, partnership serves as a cornerstone for a broad community of like-minded individuals and organizations. In their most authentic form, partnerships unite us in fellowship, driven by a shared purpose and vision.

Embracing True Partnership

Having worked at StartCHURCH for almost four years, I have discovered that everyone here wholeheartedly embraces this partnership definition and recognizes its immense power. For us, partnership is not just a concept; it's a guiding principle that shapes how we interact with our clients, colleagues, and partners. We believe true partnership is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to our common goal. It is through a partnership that we can achieve greater impact and build a stronger, more connected community of Christ's followers.
