How to Create a Healthy Church Budget for 2025

By America Kimlinger

My husband and I just wrapped up our family budget for the year, and I must admit, it’s no small task. With two teenage sons who seem to have endless energy for outdoor activities and a love for eating out (maybe a little too much), it feels like we’re constantly working to balance the needs of our growing family. We know how important it is to get our finances in order to keep things running smoothly!

Have you tackled your church budget yet? I know that for many pastors, the idea of creating a church budget can feel overwhelming. But let me tell you, just like in our home, a well-planned budget is essential for your ministry's health, ensuring your church is set up to fulfill God's vision. When finances are well-managed, they directly impact how effectively your church operates and how it carries out its mission.

Why Budgets Are Necessary

When my husband and I first took on the task of creating our family budget, it was overwhelming—and let’s be honest, it wasn’t exactly fun! But once we organized everything, it made life much more manageable and gave us peace of mind. The same is true for your church budget. Let me share why this is so important:

Tracking Finances helps you see where your money is coming from and where it’s going, allowing for better decision-making.

Protecting the Board – A well-planned budget demonstrates that the board is acting in the church's best interest, proving financial transparency.

Identifying Weak Areas – It reveals any mismanagement, ensures accountability, and helps to keep finances on track.

Steps to Create a Budget

Now that we understand why a budget is essential let's break down the steps to create one.

  1. Start Early – If you don’t have your 2025 budget yet, start today.
  2. Know Your Income – Realistically assess your expected income for the year.
  3. Allocate Expenses – Prioritize necessary costs like staff salaries, facilities, and ministry programs.
  4. Set Clear Goals – Identify areas where you need to save or fundraise to meet church goals.
  5. Get Team Buy-in – Ensure the board reviews the budget and shares concerns.
  6. Create a plan to manage office expenses- track who spends what, when, where, and why, ensuring regular accountability for church funds.

Sticking to Your Church Budget

Creating a budget is just the first step—the real challenge is sticking to it! Our family has learned that staying on track takes ongoing discipline - a lesson my sons have yet to learn. We’re usually right on target by January and February, but come March, we start "flexing" it a bit. Sound familiar? It’s the same with your church budget. One of the keys to sticking to your church budget is maintaining accurate financial records. If you haven’t considered the importance of bookkeeping for your church, here are 2 things to keep in mind:

1. Bookkeeping is crucial to managing your budget effectively. Regularly tracking income and expenses helps you spot trends and make necessary adjustments. In our family, keeping tabs on where our money goes has been a game-changer—it’s the same for your church.

2. Staying motivated at the start of the year is easy, but staying disciplined throughout the year is where the real work begins. Regular reviews allow you to spot discrepancies and make timely adjustments, ensuring you stay aligned with your financial goals and mission.

Conclusion

Thoughtful financial stewardship is about more than just numbers—it’s about ensuring your church can continue to thrive and fulfill God’s calling. As 2 Corinthians 9:6 says, "whoever sows generously will also reap generously." By sowing wise financial practices today, your church will be poised to reap the rewards of healthy finances tomorrow.
