Planning an Unforgettable Christmas Eve Service

By Paul Millarc

Our family loves our Christmas Eve church tradition. Amidst the holiday chaos, this service centers us on the true meaning of Christmas. We pause and focus on the Savior amid the hustle and bustle of the season.

With Christmas Eve fast approaching, it's essential to get it right! Let me guide you in preparing your heart and church for this impactful service.

1) Embrace the Power of Prayer

It's common for churches to get caught up in the busyness of planning and preparing for Christmas without seeking God's guidance. I've been there too. Unfortunately, we often forget to invite the Lord to the table. This holiday season, let's unite in prayer as a church, reflecting on God's faithfulness throughout the year and asking for His continued guidance.

Consider creating a daily devotional for your website, sending out prayer reminders to congregants, or sharing advent videos on your online platforms, especially social media. Do whatever it takes to encourage families to pray together and infuse the year-end calendar with prayer.

2) Prioritize Quality Time Together

Feel free to organize moments of togetherness for the church during this service. Whether it's serving tea and cookies in the foyer, setting up a themed backdrop for family photos, or giving unique gifts to visitors, aim for a relaxed atmosphere. Provide hot cocoa, apple cider, and snacks, allowing people ample time to chat and connect.

Christmas can be challenging for many, and the desire for community and belonging is profound. Remember, the church family might be the only accessible family for those feeling lonely.

During the service, encourage a greeting time or moments for people to pray for one another. Many churches also observe communion/the Lord's Supper. While the Christmas Eve service is typically shorter (around 35-55 minutes), leaving room for conversation and lingering can enhance valuable fellowship opportunities.

3) Create Lasting Memories

Christmas Eve service is a time for gathering to celebrate the arrival of the Savior. It's an opportunity to infuse unique touches that leave a lasting impression. For instance, our church transformed the foyer into a snowy wonderland using a movie-quality snowmaker after the service.

Explore creative ideas like candles, fireworks, music programs, or live nativities. Simultaneously, honor the church's traditions like carol singing, candle lighting, and readings that provide a sense of continuity and familiarity, especially for first-time guests.

To make this service truly special, early planning is essential. Achieving excellence in these special touches requires weeks of preparation, not just a few days.

4) Engage Everyone through Acts of Giving!

What better time for generosity than Christmas? Encourage participation by providing opportunities for giving. Collaborate with a local food bank to collect canned goods or request members to bring gently used coats for shelters or toys for families in need. If there's a special mission offering during the service, it’s a reminder of Jesus, the greatest gift, encouraging us to give to others.

Consider incorporating a children's sermon, where kids participate in an advent candle lighting and scripture reading led by different families in the congregation. Involve as many people as possible.

Have you considered extending your church's outreach by establishing a Community Development Corporation as an outreach arm? Many churches are creating impactful initiatives to support their communities with these!

5) Prepare Strategically and Thoroughly

When is your Christmas service scheduled for this year? How do you plan to equip your members to invite their friends and neighbors? Utilizing your social media platforms effectively for anticipation and community engagement is crucial. Make timely purchases for necessary items to prevent supply shortages, and consider the early involvement of volunteers, especially since some leaders may be away.

I hope and pray that you beautifully convey the significance and splendor of the incarnation this Christmas season, emphasizing all that God has bestowed upon us through His Son. As you plan your Christmas Eve service, may it shine brightly with the message of love and hope.
